This week we get the critically acclaimed and controversial Django Unchained, from director Quentin Tarantino. Starring Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Waltz we see a western style film with flair that only Mr. Tarantino can deliver. With the help of a German bounty hunter (Waltz), a freed slave (Foxx) sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner (DiCaprio.) While this might not be for everyone, the trailer does get you “attention”… [Read more...]

Tax Day Freebies

TaxDayAh yes, the dreaded tax day is here. As the saying goes “Nothing is certain but death and taxes”… now you can add “freebies” to that. It has become a new tradition that businesses who ‘sympathize’ with the tax payer offer some freebies on tax day. This can obviously vary depending on your area, but according to an article in the Sacramento Bee, there are plenty of businesses to check out today. [Read more...]

DemandItBannerIf you have kids, your house could be similar to mine. Focus in the evening is on dinner, chores, homework, bath and bed. Goal at our house is usually to fit in some family time each evening. Whether it is reading a story together or watching some TV, just having everyone together in the same room with no video games or computers on is a plus.

While we might choose to watch a hockey or baseball game some nights, most times the kids like to have it on Disney Channel. Maybe your house is more of a Nickelodeon home (or Hub, or Cartoon Network, or Sprout.) Whatever your favorite show, Armstrong always has a great selection of kids programming available in the On Demand library. While Phineas and Ferb rule the TV in our house, we do enjoy Jessie, Good Luck Charlie and even Dog With A Blog from time to time.

So, if you are an Armstrong customer, you can have access to all the Phineas and Ferb (or Dog With A Blog) you can handle. All for no additional fees. Hit up channel 1 and ‘Demand It’ tonight for some family fun.

concertcrowdAs a fan of rock music, I really enjoy seeing live concerts. Nothing beats seeing live music from one of your favorite artists or bands. But some acts are just as good as the real thing. Have you ever seen a group play another bands music almost as good as them? That is what is referred to as a cover band. Have you ever seen a group dress, act and play exactly like the original band? That is a tribute band.

One of the most common tribute group concepts is KISS; easily identified by the makeup, hair, costumes and even pyrotechnics. Did you know that there are many major acts the tour and perform globally as tribute bands? Our good friends at AXS TV are highlighting some of the best tribute acts with their spring series “The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands.” A pounding live concert presented in stunning HD. Life Hacking

If you are not familiar with the term “life hack” you might assume it has something to do with computers, code and mainframes. For the most part, a life hack has very little to do with a computer, but has a lot to do with making your life a little easier. Whether you realize it or not, you have probably seen and even used one of these tips. Generally they might involve a simple picture with white block-font at the top and bottom, explaining the shortcut or tip you see in the picture. (See examples below)

Many of these give you just a little “ah ha” or ”why didn’t I think of that” moment. With sites like Lifehacker.com or Lifehack.org you can get full articles with more information and tips than you can from a life hack picture you see on Facebook or Pinterest. Either way, these little “hacks” can give you ways to make your life run a little smoother.

From ways to use your cellphone or tablet to become better organized to ways to repurpose and reuse household items to solve life’s everyday dilemmas. Many of these revolve around food, home office or cleaning. What life hacks have you used? Have you developed any yourself?

Oops!

momdaughteripadMost parents these days have at one time or another handed their iPhone, iPad or other smartphone or tablet to their child to keep them preoccupied while they were waiting somewhere, perhaps at a restaurant. Maybe, as a parent, you have even let your children pick apps and games to purchase. But, how much attention do you pay after that?

A lot has been made out of the “in-app purchase” systems, especially with Apple’s app store; most notably when a five year old spent $2,500.  According to a Tech Crunch article, apple has made a change to the way apps with in-app purchases appear in the app store. While the new change does make the purchaser aware of the app that there are in-app pkidsipadurchases, it does not stop kids from quickly accessing an in-app purchase.

Do you have your phone “kid proof” or are do you know. Make sure your settings are set up to require a password after every purchase. You can even hide the app store if you worry your children might be able to figure out a password. Every parent will have to make the adjustments that are right for them.
