Maps

How do you get from Point A to Point B these days? I can remember days of highlighting a travel atlas and keeping it in the passengers seat when taking a road trip. Soon came the days of printing out your MapQuest or Google Maps directions and keeping those handy. Soon came GPS and smart phones with map access. These days I am not worried in the least. I know that at any point in my travels I could easily punch in an address, search for a business name or even bring up an app like Yelp and just type in the food I might want and follow the directions.

mapsAs an iPhone user I have several choices to help me find my way. Apple’s build in Map app is great for a quick view of my surroundings, finding a near by address or clicking through from an address in an email. If I am using a Google based app like Chrome or Google Search, I can be taken directly to the Google Maps app. However, if I want real time updates and time saving turn-by-turn directions, I go with waze. Waze is a crowd-sourced GPS navigation app that allows users to report road hazards, accidents and police traps, while the app collects speed and delay location in real time. While the app is somewhat gamified, it is meant to help every day users find safe and quick routes to and from their daily destinations.

Waze just made the news recently, as it is rumored to be in talks with Facebook in a possible buyout deal. Hopefully they will leave the app relatively unchanged, much like they did with the Instagram purchase. Either way, waze remains my go-to app for turn-by-turn navigation.

How do you approach your road trips and directionally challenged adventures? Do you prepare with a hard copy map or printout or are you a GPS convert?

Check!

checkmarkChecking off a few things on your to-do list is a pretty good feeling. You accomplished something. While it could be something as simple as picking up bread and milk, it could also have been that daunting task that has haunted you for months or years. With today’s busy schedules, most people need calendars or to-do lists, or some combination of both, to keep them on task.

As an all-digital kind of guy, I of course keep all my calendar and to-do information on my phone and computer. Using Evernote, my email and online calendars, I have most information I need at my fingertips. After that, I just need something to remind me to do certain tasks. While not every task is important enough to become a calendar item, many are things that require some sort of alert. Apple’s Reminders app for iOS was a great solution, allowing you to remind based on time or location. However, I recently began using Any.Do which works across multiple platforms.

Allowing me to also remind based on time and location, Any.Do also reminds me to organize my tasks in the morning and has alerts and snoozing built it. I have found myself making more “tasks” with Any.Do and completing them on time. While some new apps, like Carrot, give you incentives for completing tasks (as well as, inversely shaming you for not completing them), you have to find the system that is right for you.

I have a co-worker who has a primitive multi-level post-it note system that she (and only she) understands. Others use a mixed system with both digital and pen/paper elements. What system do you use?

Tax Day Freebies

TaxDayAh yes, the dreaded tax day is here. As the saying goes “Nothing is certain but death and taxes”… now you can add “freebies” to that. It has become a new tradition that businesses who ‘sympathize’ with the tax payer offer some freebies on tax day. This can obviously vary depending on your area, but according to an article in the Sacramento Bee, there are plenty of businesses to check out today. [Read more...]

Oops!

momdaughteripadMost parents these days have at one time or another handed their iPhone, iPad or other smartphone or tablet to their child to keep them preoccupied while they were waiting somewhere, perhaps at a restaurant. Maybe, as a parent, you have even let your children pick apps and games to purchase. But, how much attention do you pay after that?

A lot has been made out of the “in-app purchase” systems, especially with Apple’s app store; most notably when a five year old spent $2,500.  According to a Tech Crunch article, apple has made a change to the way apps with in-app purchases appear in the app store. While the new change does make the purchaser aware of the app that there are in-app pkidsipadurchases, it does not stop kids from quickly accessing an in-app purchase.

Do you have your phone “kid proof” or are do you know. Make sure your settings are set up to require a password after every purchase. You can even hide the app store if you worry your children might be able to figure out a password. Every parent will have to make the adjustments that are right for them.

The Best Part of March Madness

basketball2

What is the best part of March Madness? Brackets? Non-stop basketball for 3 weeks? One of my favorite parts is basketball being on during the week day afternoon. If you are fortunate enough to be able to watch these games in front of a big screen, the you have it made.

However, if you are like most folks, you are busy during the day and can’t prop your feet up on your recliner. The NCAA makes it a bit easier for you to catch some of the basketball action. Head on over to ArmstrongMyWire.com to see how you can get set up from a desktop or laptop, tablet or smart phone. Take the Madness with you.

Brackets

basketball2I am not a gambler at all. I don’t play cards or even buy an occasional lottery ticket. However, I do love to fill out a March Madness bracket just for the fun of it. If there is an office “bragging-rights” pool I am usually inclined to fill out what is sure to be a lot of wrong picks.

My main reason: to make the games a little more interesting to watch; “how good were my picks (read: guesses)?”

Keep up with all this year’s “madness” with Armstrong.

March Madness

Why do I love this time of year? Spring is near. My birthday is in March. St. Patrick’s Day is always fun. Girl Scout Cookies get delivered. And of course, March Madness. Can it get much better? Well, yes! Yes it can. I can now watch March Madness games anywhere I want!

BasketballArmstrong customers can enjoy live streaming of all 67 games of the 2013 NCAA® Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. NCAA March Madness Live® is FREE with your Armstrong subscription.

Armstrong customers will have access to authenticated March Madness content being streamed on TBS.com, TNT.tv and Trutv.com. (Games broadcast on CBS will be streamed for free without authentication.) Enjoy live streaming at home or on the road on your computer, tablet or smart phone. The March Madness app will be available in the App Store and on Google Play in early March.

Spring Forward!

springdaisyI can always remember that Daylight Saving Time would often fall on Easter Sunday. The reason I remember this is because it was OK to lose that extra hour of sleep knowing you could wake up to your Easter basket an hour earlier. Well, since it was modified a while back it happens a bit sooner these days.

So, while we all wait on that Spring-like weather, don’t forget to set your clocks ahead 1 hour this Sunday, March 10.  If you have a set top box with a clock, we will adjust that one for you.  You get the microwaves, watches and car radios.

It is also a good reminder to check your smoke alarm batteries.

Sunny Days… Keeping the TV away?

It’s that time of year again when believe it or not, the sun can interfere with television signal for short periods during the day. Even though this happens twice a year, many people still don’t understand Sun Outages or have even heard of them for that matter. Let’s take a look at the most obvious question.

What is a sun outage?
